I wasn’t sure how I would feel about Nemon and Joanie, having thoroughly enjoyed Thrax and Claire in “The Scorpion’s Mate”. Sometimes a follow-up story will fall somewhat flat for me, but that was not the case with this book. The author does such a marvelous job of making very non-human-looking aliens not only acceptable as partners but even sexy. I appreciated the well written erotic scenes; excellent job describing how the suckers on the tentacles not only feel to Joanie but also how Nemon touches, scents, and tastes everything through them. It added a completely different level to the intimate scenes. The best thing about this book was Nemon, himself. While he was a terrifying predator on his home planet, he’s been thrust into a completely new world that allows him to expand his mind, his emotions, far beyond anything he could possibly have achieved if he was never abducted by the Iriduans. Seeing this predator explore his surroundings with an almost child-like wonder, learning about machines, finding his mate; trying so very hard to convince the aliens around him that he isn’t a danger. That he could control his predatory impulses. Unlike Thrax, I wanted to hug Nemon, reassure him. I have a big, squishy soft spot for Hs that are unsure of themselves, of the world they find themselves thrust into. But, when Joanie was threatened, Nemon was more than capable of protecting her .... as all the best heroes are.
There is an excellent epilogue at the end of the story, along with a few questions the author asks of her readers in the Author’s Notes. I’d like to answer a few of those. I would definitely enjoy reading a story about Tirel and Theresa - it must be Theresa, she just HAS to regret leaving him! And for Tarin; sure, only make her love interest extremely alien. She deserves it after turning her nose up at the relationship between Thrax and Claire! I’m also very happy to hear about Nahash’s story as I really like snakes; please have a lot of “fun” writing that one ... looking forward to those sensual scenes ;)

The Kraken Mate Iriduan Test Subjects Book 2 edition by Susan Trombley Romance eBooks Reviews
I LOVED this story! I didn't even bother trying this one out by borrowing on my KU before I purchased, instead right after I finished Scorpion's Mate I bought this. I was dying inside reading it because I knew I was getting closer to the end with every "page turn!" This is one of those books you just want more of. I really liked the setting of where the characters develop their relationship, which isn't typical of me, I love the 'capture and take away' type romances, where the hero and heroine are alone so being surrounded by everyone and not being able to have them have their space - well I thought it was going to throw things off a bit for me. It didn't! It worked out amazingly well and I think it really added to the story as well as their relationship. I also wanted to add, I absolutely loved how the author described the tentacles - I won't ruin anything, but it was really an engaging read (and so sexy!)
My only (minor) annoyance was Joanie in places. I feel like she could have...I don't know, been more reachable. I didn't feel very connected to her at times. Especially regarding her trauma as a test subject that she spoke of. I 'heard' her repeat things, but I had a hard time attaching myself to her because I felt like she was a bit non-emotional about the whole ordeal. There was only one point where you realized how much this affected her and I wish she had been a little more vulnerable emotionally during the rest of the book.
Love, love love this book!
The Iriduan Test Subject series just seems to be getting better.
Nemon is our hero. He’s a giant tentacled alien. He’s also, smoking hot, curious, intelligent, loyal...basically the perfect men. Seriously there is nothing I don’t love about him. I had a bit of a harder time with Joanie, the heroine. Probably because she is so NOT me. She was well written but her personality is so at odds with mine that I occasionally found her annoying. The book was really about her journey to accept her attraction to Nemon. I really loved it though, which I think I already mentioned. I can’t wait for the next book in the series!
Read this book if you love your aliens with tentacles and hearts, three of them, of gold!
I’m a fan of tentacles, so reading Nemon’s physicality was really fun! I just wish the author had gone a little deeper in describing the characters’ POVs. The story lacked a strong visceral component; though 1st Person is so perfect for that kind of deep dive. Unfortunately, the author kept so much of each encounter to just skimming the surface.
The love scenes were an example of this. So much description of what the hero was doing, but little description of how it made the heroine feel. My mind kept asking “But what does it FEEL like? What was her body/mind’s reaction to that action?” as the hero would try out different techniques/anatomy. It took me out of the heroine’s head to a certain degree and made it all feel a little clinical and formulaic.
Another opportunity lost was the scene including the heroine’s worry over stretch marks and sagging skin (we’ve all been there, right?!). It was the perfect opportunity for the author to suck the reader in by describing what those marks and curves looked like from his perspective, as something fascinating and beautiful in his eyes... to show how different POV creates radically different experience.
But no... nothing was said about her “imperfections”. Instead the hero just regurgitates the stock romance novel incites - she’s “beautiful”, “soft”, “dusky rose <fill in the blank>”, etc.
I really wish the author had used the opportunity to develop an alien way of viewing the world for our experience with Nemon, rather than his alienness being only skin deep. She did it for Thrax (and it was one of the things I loved about him.)
