Southern Hospitality is outrageous and poignant—part crime thriller, part bittersweet exploration of family and identity.

Death and family reunions just go together. Half brothers Greg and Robert Dale have never met, but when a Georgia Game Fish Commissioner named Maynard Patterson turns up dead on a lonely stretch of dirt road in rural Georgia, they are thrown into each other’s lives in ways—and neither of them is too happy about it.

It is 1985 and Greg Albert Thrasher is enjoying the quiet life he has carved out for himself with his boyfriend Tracy in Oakland, California. Then Greg receives a phone call that will upend his life. He is aware that his late father, a career Navy man, married and fathered a son with his high school sweetheart in Haylow, Georgia, before he met Greg’s mother. Greg agrees to go to Georgia to sign a bond for this unknown half-brother’s release from jail, not knowing that he’s wading right into a swampy mess that is a world away from fun, frenetic, roaring San Francisco—a mess that includes danger, deception, unearthed family skeletons, and the maddening attentions of a slick, golden-haired southern Adonis.

Robert Dale works most afternoons on his Aunt Doris and Uncle Herbert’s farm, where he’d grown up doing grunt work in the fields. Like many farmers who had once supplemented their incomes with making moonshine in the low, flat, swampy terrain east of the Okefenokee Swamp, Doris and Herbert have found creative ways to make money. Robert Dale finds himself a mini-baron of marijuana in a thirty-mile stretch of pine fields from Haylow to Cargill. It was bound to catch up with him, and now it has, and Robert Dale will have to do a lot of things wrong—jeopardizing himself and his loved ones—before he can make things right again.

I was intrigued from the beginning of this book unit the end. Yes, there were a few grammar and punctuation errors but I can always overlook those if there is a great story. I think so many people want a HEA story and believe me life is not always like that. If you are looking for that, it might be best that you forgo reading this. I read late in the night and got up early in the morning to finish this book because I had to know so many conclusions. The ending was not what I expected but hey who's life ever is what they imagined or hoped for.

Southern Hospitality A Novel edition by James Bennett Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I like the story idea behind this book, but I have to say there was a lot wrong. A big problem was the horrible editing. I don't want to seem picky but punctuation is actually important. The writing seemed very disjointed and it made it hard to get into any kind of rhythm. My largest problem is the feeling of being a little ripped off. I love m/m romance and I know it is becoming very popular, that's why I think the Greg character is in this book. He doesn't really add much to the story, there is very little interaction with his brother, and his death just just unimportant to the story! All in all I would not recommend this book.
Awesome. This books leaves you wanting more. I am waiting to find out what happens with Robert Dale now. I hope there is a sequel.
After the first two pages, I was hooked, line and sinker. Didn't want to put it down. I wish there was more to read! Shocked at the end.
This thrilling crime drama makes you feel like you just stepped back into the 80's. A must read! I couldn't put the book down. The small town corruption keeps you wanting more! It makes you realize that blood is thicker than water. I hope the sequel is on its way... I need to know more.
I loved this book. The writer did a wonderful job of showing what it was like to live in South Georgia back in the 80's. The story line kept my attention the whole time. Can't wait to see if there is another book to follow.
I had the pleasure of talking with the author about this book. It was just as enjoyable listening to him as it was reading his book. The story line is very intricate, somewhat outrageous and full of many colorful characters. I live in South Georgia and know some of the places mentioned in the book. Yes, people down here really do talk like that. Was a little disappointed in the ending, this book definitely needs a sequel.
I truly enjoyed the romp through the South Georgia countryside. It felt like real characters, making real choices, in a believable mystery. It's so easy to get entangled in a spider's Web of sex and drugs and that's exactly what happens . This story gives the reader insights to relate and find the many strands that touch anyone in contact, with even a part time dealer.
