What a sweet love story based upon letters sent between the author's parents during WWII.

While I enjoyed the entire novel, I especially liked the section of the book when Helen and Frank first met and were serving at the same stateside hospital. My heart melted at the kindness they each showed to the patients, especially the three friends.

The author did a nice job of weaving historical details and bits of humor throughout the novel. Well done!
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It was fantastic! If you love WWII novels, or a good love story, you will love this book! I really liked how the author took her parents true-life romance and wrote it as a novel. Helen and frank became so real to me. I wish I could have met them and heard their stories firsthand!
I loved this book! I savored it. I tried to make it last, but alas, all too soon, it came to the end. What did I discover at the end? This book was based off of real stories, letters of real WW2 heroes/heroines.

If you love WW2 and the real people that were involved, you will love this book. It really gives a unique insiders look at a war romance, without really hiding the hard stuff. It is not graphic, but it gives the clear picture of the hardships they faced. You have to get it!
Although I'm only a few chapters in, I'm totally hooked on this tale of a husband and wife both serving in uniform during WWII. Maybe because my husband and I shared that same experience in VN. But I love the author's use of idioms like "swell" and "holy cannoli" from that era. Haven't gotten to the gory war scenes yet but GREAT JOB so far Dandi Daley Mackall!
Boomers, Take Note! Don't just skim through this book! Go back and read With Love, Wherever You Are a second, perhaps even a third time, after having encountered Helen and Frank. Dandi Daley Mackall has accomplished what many of us boomers only dreamed about doing by memorializing the roles of her parents during World War II. Although she admits to literary license in developing some characters who really never were, her core motivation for this work came from the carefully preserved letters her parents had written to each other. The story line is factual regarding the details of her parents having met in training, having married after having known each other a short time, and having been sent with their units to different locations in Europe during 1944-1945. The wonder is that they remained faithful to their commitments and wrote each other, sometimes as often as three times in one day! From these letters, from having recorded her father's stories, and from mining her mother's memories, the author has given us a well researched, superbly fictionalized account of two "twenty somethings" living those anxious and uncertain times. Already known as a writer able to draw the reader into the minds of her characters, Mackall helps us experience the thoughts, both positive and doubtful, the emotions, and the steadfast determination of these two individuals. Be prepared for how personally involved with Frank and Helen you'll become.. They were just as real as our parents, who lived through the great depression and the second world war and shaped us boomers. Motivated by the author, perhaps some of us may go back to that collection of our parents' memorabilia and come to know them far better than we had before. If so fortunate to know a World War II survivor, we ought to excavate that memory for its treasured worth, and thank Dandi Daley Mackall for having encouraged us to do so.
A precious love story based on a real couple and parents of the author. I felt I knew Frank and Helen as I read this story. Also, it gave me a great glimpse into the lives of people of the Greatest Generation during WWII. As a daughter of a WWII veteran who didn't say much about his time in the war overseas, Dandi's book provided me some insight of the reality of that time and era with Frank and Helen's story.
War is TERRIBLE. I think most of us will agree to that. The physical atrocities blindness(physical and mental), lost limbs, loss of life.Just being an immediate part of that, the doctors and nurses and any onlookers, must have been shocked and numbed because the fact is that those cruelties took place every day. Man's inhumanity against man.
Also don't forget the loss of ANY creature comforts, poor food, poor accommodations plus danger from surroundings enemy planes, enemies with guns or grenades or knives. Who wouldn't be deeply affected by this sceanario. What would these awful situations do to anyone's thinking?
By coincidence?( I don't believe in coincidences) instead a plan from On High, Helen and Frank, nurse and doctor met and went to war.
Helen and Frank had each other. They had their love, which admittedly suffered a few bumps on the road to lasting marriage. Not only bumps, but deep potholes. However, their love smoothed over the depressions and won. They did not let the war win over them, they won the war for themselves. They were married for 51 years! Really!
