“The passionate quest of a family to escape poverty and find purpose. Ralph seeks sons, Ryan, the violent soldier, seeks deliverance and Rosie, the feisty intellectual, seeks to fulfil her life as an empowered woman. Destiny, the size of a penny, follows them on their journeys through the war torn streets of Cardiff, the Latin Quarter of Paris, the jungle of Malaysia, to the Equatorial Forest of Central Africa. Rugged violence marries with love, devotion and prayer in this literary adventure.”
The Penny and The Prayer Robert Reeve Books
I really enjoyed reading this novel as it's an amazing journey of a Welsh family in a post WW2 era. It allows the reader to travel through time and various cultures as the author witnesses the evolution of the three main characters, desperately hoping to find their own identity in life. Robert Reeve's writing is great and I particularly enjoyed the accuracy of various literary/historical references in the book as well as some philosophical thoughts. I found some bits a bit violent as a sensitive person, so be aware of this. Great first novel and I'm looking forward to see what will come next from this author.Product details

The Penny and The Prayer Robert Reeve Books Reviews
Having once picked up The Penny and the Prayer, I could barely put it down. It is a complete page-turner, a spellbinding, account of family hardship, heartbreak and high adventure in different parts of the world beginning in the back streets of Cardiff at the time of the Second World War. Hard and gritty realism combines with Rob's gift for inspirational, lyrical depictions of setting and mood, whether of the Latin Quarter of Paris, the jungles of Malaysia or the heart of the African continent. The at times almost dream-like atmosphere can readily turn to nightmare, with some dark and disturbing episodes. The underlying theme of the pursuing and redeeming of dreams proved relevant and helpful to me, causing me to reflect with new hope on my own family heritage and history. The conclusion is hauntingly beautiful and uplifting. Impressive by any standards, for a first novel this is an astounding achievement.
Wow. What a journey. This well written, sometimes violent book, will take you on an emotional and philosophical voyage. I enjoyed following each character and especially warmed to Rosie. A great read.
This lovely book traces the mythic restitution of family from the brokeness of war and poverty to a final epiphany of hope. Any reader will enjoy the mixture of finely crafted detail and philosophical thought contained in the plot. As the story unfolds the author skilfully weaves together a number of strands to produce a tale that is both moving and shocking but which also grasps at a future unity of humanity beyond the page.
